Currently, operators take several days to get a connection active as they need to verify ID proofs submitted by the purchaser. Activation of a new mobile connection would soon be a matter of few seconds as the government is now thinking to enable instant identity verification using Aadhaar card biometrics data, according to a report of news agency PTI. "Retailers will take the impression of customers' fingers to match it online with that of the UID card data at the point of sale that will serve as the address as well as the ID proof," the report said. "The process is underway. We will refer the matter to the Home Ministry and after getting the approval, the notification is likely be issued by the end of this year," a DoT official was also quoted as saying by PTI too. Currently, Aadhaar cards are accepted as ID proof but one has to submit other documents like Passport or Driving license to get the connection. Even after submitting all these documents, the documents need to be verified which takes several days which is essential for activation. But with the proposed system, one can get a new mobile connection in just a few seconds as vendors will take the impression of customers' fingers to match it online with that of the UID card data at the point of sale that will serve as the address as well as the ID proof.
