They can easily take a beating and survive a lot of abuse. These microphones are not very sensitive and this makes them perfect for loud sources. These can commonly be spotted on snare drums and guitar amps for the same reason. These microphones pick up sound from the area they are pointed in and drop sounds that are coming from behind them.
Condenser Microphones
These microphones are more sensitive than condenser microphones and great for scenarios that require delicate sounds to be picked up by the microphone. This type of microphone works best with brighter or softer sounds. Condenser mics are omnidirectional and pick up sounds from all around without necessarily cancelling anything. These microphones are a little more fragile than condenser mics. They are also more expensive.
Ribbon Mics
Ribbon mics are the predecessors of the other two. Among the three mentioned here, these are the most sensitive. They meant to be used to record softer sounds, like voices or the delicate sounds produced by strings. Ribbon microphones are bidirectional and record sound that is coming from the area in front of them and behind them. These microphones are fairly pricey.
